(Urban
Poverty Alleviation Project)
At the
very outset we congratulate the City Corporation of
Kochi in initiating constructive steps to eradicate
the ills and evils of slums and upgrade the slum
dwellers providing a better social security on par
with other fellow men, by joining hands with British
Government in its efforts through its Urban Poverty
Alleviation Project.
With increasing urbanization, the spread of slums
assumes a quicker pace. Attempts have been made at
various levels to reduce, if not eradicate, the
evils arising from sprawling slums.
The role of Non- Governmental Organizations in
dealing with these situations is no less important.
The achievements however have not been of the
required degree of satisfaction and an illustrative
instance is Kerala itself.
Though we have enacted "The Kerala Slum Areas
(improvement and clearance) Act, 1981" to provide
for prevention, improvement and clearance of slum
areas, no tangible work as visualized under that
enactment could be achieved. And the pettiest thing
is that even this enactment was forgotten to be
brought into force.
The Kerala Government has appreciated our role in
promoting the interests of the non-residents. Final
decisions are expected without delay.
