Niyama Sameeksha (NISA)
Trust was constituted in the year 1997 mainly with
the intention of disseminating legal knowledge at
the grass root level and providing legal aid to the
weak and the needy. With that end in view,
publication of works on various topics of public
importance was done every month. The topic covered
interalia includes, `Women and Law’, `Ayurveda and
the Laws’, `Adivasis (Tribal) and the Laws’, etc
In addition thereto the Trust has conducted various
classes and seminars even in the remotest and rural
as well as tribal areas availing the services of
eminent lawyers, Professors, law students and
leaders in the various spheres of activity. Such
meetings have created awareness in the people for
the necessity of acquisition of more and more
knowledge not only regarding law but also regarding
the scientific development affecting their daily
life.
The most important topic which attracted the people
is the revolutionary innovation in the field of
information technology. The awareness of law and
legal rights have enabled them to effectively
participate in the functioning of democratic
institutions. The introduction of people
participation schemes in the villages gave them an
opportunity to make use of the knowledge acquired by
them by participating in such classes and seminars.
Those seminars also helped them to have redressal of
their grievances by availing of the free legal aid
provided by NISA Trust.
The effective functioning of NISA Trust in the field
and the enthusiastic response received from the
people, attracted the attention of the authorities
of the Government as well as the Judiciary. As a
result thereof , the Kerala State Legal Services
authority decided to join hand with NISA Trust in
conducting classes and seminars.
The Kerala Legal services Authority headed by
Justice K.A.Abdul Gafoor, Judge, High Court of
Kerala, has granted accreditation to the Niyama
Sameeksha Trust in the year 2002. The NISA Trust
introduced a scheme for educating children in the
High School classes on their legal rights and duties
as the future citizen of the country. The booklets
published as per the request of KELSA named as `NIYAMA
PADAM’ has gathered the approval and approbation of
all. The momentum created by such a movement of NISA
Trust was so great that even the neighboring states
approached NISA Trust for guidance in this regard.
The reputation of NISA Trust in the field of legal
literacy created such an amount of confidence in the
Government, that when the Urban Poverty Alleviation
Programme of the DFID (Development for International
Development ) funded by United Kingdom, was
scheduled to be introduced in Corporation of Cochin,
the Government as well as the Corporation of Cochin
had no hesitation in entrusting the work to NISA
Trust.
The success achieved in the UPAD project prompted
the Government to entrust their new venture for the
welfare of the Non Resident Keralites. The
Non-Residents Keralites Affairs ( NORKA ) Department
constituted by the Government joined hand with NISA
under the name `NORKA-NISA Project’ for alleviating
the legal grievances of the Non Resident Keralites
in the various fields of life.
NISA Trust has established a full-fledged office in
the heart of the city of Cochin. A bunch of well
trained Advocates are deputed to effectively attend
to the problems ventilated by the NRIs.
